On September 7, 2024, Toni Buggs, past President of NCNW passed the
gavel to Dr. Gwendolyn Murrell as the newly installed President of
Metropolitain Sun of AZ NCNW. Members celebrated the witnessing of the
oath of office as new leadership joined Dr. Murrell in carrying on the legacy
of this historic organization.

NCNW was established by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1935. Dr. Bethune
established NCNW’s mission to lead, advocate, and empower women of
African descent, their families, and communities. NCNW is known as an
“organization of organizations,” (comprised of 330 campus and community-
based sections and 33 national women’s organizations that enlightens,
inspires, and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men). Dr. Mary
McCloud Bethune was an educator and activist for more than fifty years. In
addition, the organization was led by the iconic Dr. Dorothy Height as
president.

Today’s NCNW organizational priorities are to promote education,
encourage entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic stability.
NCNW educates women about health and promotes healthcare access while
promoting civic engagement. It advocates for sound public policy and social
justice. Metropolitan Sun of AZ NCNW is steadfast in adhering to these
principles as we engage with the community.

Dr. Murell is excited to continue the work of Metropolitan Sun of AZ
NCNW under the leadership of our National President and CEO Shavon
Arlene-Bradley, MPH. Mdiv.

Dr. Murells closing remarks to members and attendees is as follows, she
stated “I will close with another quote by the amazing Howard Thurman. “A
dream is the bearer of new possibilities, of enlarged horizons, and of great
hope. And I say, we can dream of possibilities; we can have great hope.
However, to achieve anything, it takes ACTION. It’s going to take action
and involvement from all of us, and together, WE CAN DO THIS. (!)”

We encourage the community to join the group at the Pyle Adult
Recreational Center in Tempe AZ on the first Saturday of each month at 11 am for the section meeting. We encourage membership to help us continue to carry out Dr. Bethune’s mission of advocating for women of African descent, their families and communities.
