Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 116,000 vehicles due to a ground connection under the passenger seat that “might have become loose” and “increase the risk of a fire,” according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

In the recalled models, the vehicle’s ground cable lug may not be secured correctly. High electrical currents potentially flowing through this connection may cause the temperature in the area to overheat, increasing a fire risk.

The following vehicle models are included in the recall, according to the NHTSA:

  • 2019-2023 GLS450
  • 2020-2023 GLE580
  • 2020-2023 GLS580
  • 2020-2024 GLE450
  • 2021-2023 AMG GLS63
  • 2021-2023 MAYBACH GLS600
  • 2021-2024 AMG GLE53
  • 2021-2024 AMG GLE63 S
  • 2023-2024 GLE350

If you own one of the recalled vehicles, you can take it to a Mercedes-Benz dealership, where they will inspect the ground connection. If necessary, the connection will be fixed free of charge. For more information, contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov for more information.

Recall letters notifying Mercedes-Benz owners about the connection problem will be mailed out by May 14.
