In honor of Black History Month, Maryland Public Television (MPT) and MPT2 are featuring a compelling lineup of programs that explore pivotal moments in African-American history. The programming, which began on Feb. 3 will last until Feb. 27. The standout documentaries focus on a variety of topics such as The Great Migration, great Black mathematicians in history and personal stories of success, such as that of Josie Johnson, shedding light on remarkable stories of resilience and achievement.
The Great Migration series chronicles the journey of millions of African Americans who left the South in search of better opportunities in the North and West between 1910 and 1970. The MPT programming will examine the challenges faced, the communities built and the lasting impact of the mass movement of Black people on American society.
The documentaries focused on The Great Migration and included in this month’s programming include “Streets Paved with Gold,” which aired Feb. 4, “A People on the Move-One Way Ticket Back,” which will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. on MPT, and “Coming to America,” available for viewers on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. on MPT

This month, MPT will also highlight Black excellence in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which are quickly expanding career paths as artificial intelligence continues to develop. The contributions and achievements of Black mathematicians will also be on full display for all those who tune in to offerings such as “Forging Resilience,” which airs Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. on MPT and on Monday, Feb. 10 at 10 p.m. on MPT2 and “Creating Pathways,” which airs Sunday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. on MPT and on Monday, Feb. 17 at 10 p.m. on MPT2.
The programming offered will also include the stories of activists like Josie Johnson, a lifelong civil rights advocate who played a critical role in the fight for racial justice. From voter registration efforts to shaping public policy, her work had a lasting influence on the country.
The documentary “Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story,” will air Sunday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. on MPT and on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 9 PM on MPT2.
Be sure to tune in to MPT this month for a wide range of programming aimed at providing an opportunity to reflect on the struggles and triumphs that have shaped Black history in America.
