Malcolm Thomas: A Lifetime of Dedication

Malcolm Thomas’s journey with Phillips C.M.E. Church began in 1969 when he united with the congregation under the pastorate of the late Rev. Lawrence L. Reddick, Jr. Since then, his commitment and service have been unwavering. Nominated to the Board of Trustees by the late Rev. Dr. M. D. Clark in 1979, Thomas was confirmed by the Quarterly Conference and subsequently elected Chairman of the Board in the same year.

Over his 45-year tenure, Thomas has been a steadfast leader, guiding the board through various challenges and accomplishments. He was pivotal in fulfilling routine responsibilities, overseeing property restoration projects, coordinating a significant church renovation, and addressing issues related to eminent domain. Despite working under the supervision of 10 pastors, Thomas’s dedication remained steadfast.

His impact extends beyond the boardroom, with his name gracing two cornerstones of the church—one installed during a Mortgage-Burning Ceremony in 1994 and another laid at the Winchester Road facility in 2023. Thomas also spearheaded the church’s relocation project in 2017, navigating challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure its successful completion.

Thomas’s leadership extended to implementing lasting practices within the church community, such as Trustee Day celebrations and the Annual Christmas Fellowship. His gift of hospitality was evident as he hosted gatherings at his home, fostering camaraderie among board members and churchgoers alike.

Beyond his church involvement, Thomas has been a dedicated community servant, serving on numerous boards and councils, including the Huntsville Housing Authority Board of Appeals and the North Alabama Sickle Cell Board of Directors. He has also been actively involved in organizations such as the R. E. Nelms Elks Lodge No. 977 and the Delta Theta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Thomas’s professional achievements are equally remarkable. He served as CEO of Malcolm Thomas Industries and held the position of Alabama State Commissioner of the Governor’s Commission on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Alabama A&M University.

Born in Selma, Alabama, Thomas is the son of the late Rev. George Thomas and Mrs. Lovie Anderson Thomas. He shares his life with his wife, Dr. Mattie Daniels Thomas, and their family.

Bro. Malcolm Thomas’s legacy of service within the church and the broader community is a testament to his unwavering commitment and dedication. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
