WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn Issued The Following Statement On House Passage Of H.R. 4, The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act:

“Today’s Vote Honors The Life’s Work Of My Dear Friend John Lewis And All People Who Have Valued The Sacred Right To Vote—People Like My Father, Who Pasted A Sign In The Window Of Our Home When He Was Allowed To Register To Vote That Read: ‘I Am Registered. Are You?’ Today’s Vote Honors All Americans Who Fought, Bled, And Died For The Right To Vote, Setting The Path For My Colleagues, Like Congresswoman Terri Sewell, And Me To Push This Bill Across The Finish Line. But, More Importantly, This Bill Helps Guarantee A Future For Our Grandchildren. If We Do Not Protect The Right To Vote, Those Four Grandchildren Of Mine Will Have To Experience The Same Voter Suppression My Parents Endured. We Cannot Allow That To Happen.

“The American People, Especially People Who Look Like Me, Believe Strongly In The Future Of This Country. They Still Hold Out Hope That This Country Is Their Best Bet For The Future And The Future Of Their Children. With Today’s Vote, The House Demonstrated That We Are Committed To Equality And Upholding Our Democracy. Now The Senate Must Do The Same.”
