The deadline to apply for missed stimulus payments issued in 2021 is less than a month away, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Some 1 million taxpayers are eligible for stimulus payments of up to $1,400. The money, technically known as Recovery Rebate Credit, is for those who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments issued during the COVID pandemic.

Most of those eligible left the space for Recover Rebate Credit blank or filled it out as $0 when they were actually eligible, the IRS said.

In total, the IRS will distribute some $2.4 billion.

Most eligible taxpayers don’t have to do anything to receive their money, however, people who haven’t filed their 2021 tax returns could be eligible as well. Those people are required to file before they receive their refunds, even if their income from a job, business or other source was minimal or non-existent.

The payments will be automatically sent via direct deposit or by paper check; eligible taxpayers will also receive a separate letter notifying them of the payment.

The deadline to submit the tax returns is April 15.
