Barriers in place as construction begins on the Interstate 565 widening project in Madison County, part of a $42 million effort to add lanes and improve traffic flow. Dec. 5, 2024.

The Huntsville metropolitan area is undergoing a major infrastructure transformation with road projects totaling approximately $389 million. These efforts, funded through a mix of federal, state, and local resources, include expansions and upgrades to U.S. 72, Interstate 565, and the Northern Bypass, among others.

Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon praised the progress during a recent Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting, highlighting advancements in key projects like Interstate 565 and the Northern Bypass.

Project Highlights

*U.S. 72 Widening

*This $89 million project will widen U.S. 72 from Providence Main to County Line Road in three phases:

*Phase 1: Indian Creek bridges to Walnut Street ($15M, 90% complete).

*Phase 2: Walnut Street to Huntsville Memorial Park ($36M, scheduled for 2028).

*Phase 3: County Line Road to Walnut Street ($38M, scheduled for 2030).

Interstate 565 Expansion

Additional lanes are being added between County Line Road and Wall Triana Highway. Currently 5% complete, this $42 million project is largely federally funded (90%). Construction has begun in the median.

Northern Bypass

Stretching from Pulaski Pike to U.S. 231, this project is 20% complete with utilities being moved and grading ongoing. The $43 million project includes drainage structures and blasting work.

Martin Road

The two-phase project runs from Zierdt Road to Laracy Drive. While Phase 1 is finished, Phase 2—at 15% completion—is progressing with utility work before grading and drainage begin. The combined budget is $42 million.

Memorial Parkway at Mastin Lake Road

This $44 million project, now 35% complete, includes service road construction, retaining walls, and a bridge over Mastin Lake Road.

Additional Projects

*U.S. 231 Access Management: $15M, 85% design completion; construction begins in fiscal year 2025.

*Winchester Road: $28M for upgrades from Dominion Circle to Naugher Road; 90% design complete.

*State Route 53 Widening: $10M for work from Taurus Drive to Harvest Road; construction to start this fiscal year.

*Madison Boulevard Resurfacing: $4M for resurfacing from Westchester Road to Flagstone Drive; 75% complete.

*Jeff Road Improvements: $13.5M for upgrades from Capshaw Road to Douglas Road; construction starts in 2026.

*Blake Bottom Road Widening: $21M project from Jeff Road to State Road 255; construction to start by summer 2025.

*State Route 53 Intersection Improvements: $2.7M project, 65% complete.

*Arsenal East Connector: $30M preliminary engineering stage to ease congestion near Redstone Arsenal, slated for 2028.

*These projects are set to improve traffic flow and connectivity across the Huntsville metro area, with completion timelines spanning the next several years.
