SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS
In a unanimous decision, the Huntsville City Council has greenlit a $15 million upgrade to the iconic Von Braun Center (VBC) with the aim of attracting larger theater performances. City administrator John Hamilton emphasized the significance of the project, which will span one year and include enhancements to the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, Playhouse, and the Saturn Ballroom. The improvements involve extending the concert hall, enlarging the VBC kitchen, and addressing infrastructure limitations to accommodate elaborate stage setups.
Hamilton highlighted the necessity of upgrading the infrastructure to support rigging, lights, and substantial props, enabling the VBC to host more expansive Broadway theater-type events. The project also entails expanding the green room to accommodate a greater num- ber actors, musicians, and performers.
The approved expenditure reflects the city’s commitment to modernizing the VBC, a cultural icon in the community for nearly 50 years. The anticipated improvements are expected to enhance the venue’s capabilities, making it more attractive for diverse and larger-scale cultural performances. The VBC, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, looks forward to a new era of cultural vibrancy with these enhancements.”
