Shante Hudson

A Hueytown man has been convicted in the 2023 shooting death of a 45-year-old man who was killed trying to break up an argument at a wake in Montevallo.

A Shelby County jury on Thursday convicted 34-year-old Corey Antwon Broadnax of murder in the slaying of Shante Hudson.

The shooting happened shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at the gathering on Melton Street.

Police arrived on the scene to find Hudson, of Bessemer, had been shot multiple times. He was taken to Shelby Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities said Hudson was a family of Broadnax’s estranged wife. Hudson attempted to intervene to stop an altercation between Broadnax and his wife when Broadnax shot Hudson eight times.

“Mr. Broadnax’s senseless shooting of Mr. Hudson was despicable, and tragic for the Hudson family,” said Shelby County District Attorney Matt Casey.

“We hope this conviction will bring closure to the family, as well as stand as a reminder to any that would commit acts of violence in our community that we will vigorously pursue your prosecution.”

The case against Broadnax was investigated by the Montevallo Police Department.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Ben Fuller and Assistant District Attorney Sara Beth Eldridge prosecuted the case at trial.

A sentencing date has not yet been set for Broadnax.

Because of two prior felony convictions, Broadnax will face a range of punishment between 99 years or life imprisonment under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act.

Hudson was a graduate Montevallo High School and attended Jefferson State Community College. He served in the U.S. Army until his retirement, according to his obituary.

He worked at U.S. Steel in Fairfield for 13 yearsas a crane operator, and later joined the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as a driver until death.

“Tae demonstrated a work ethic of dedication and resilience throughout his career,’’ his obituary read. “Tae valued his family and friends. He went above and beyond to provide a quality of life for his wife and children.

“He was well-known for his stylish swag and his multiple vehicle collection,’’ according to the obituary. “He adored his mother and their quality time together.”
