By Sheila McNeil, chair of the Madison County Democratic Executive Committee
(Huntsville, AL) The last three months of the presidential election have been a whirlwind; today, we declare victory. This election has been a nail-biter with high stakes of an extremely close race. Now that all the votes are cast, we can declare victory over division, victory over fascism, victory over racism, and victory over the past 10 years of Trumpism.
Instead, we declare victory for unity, victory for democracy, victory for women’s reproductive rights, victory for a better economy, victory for a new path forward, and victory for the country’s first female, African-American, and South Indian president who vows to be the leader for all Americans. President-elect Harris has not only made history as the first female president in the county’s history, but she is the most qualified candidate ever to seek the office, breaking this glass ceiling in record-breaking time, something else no other candidate has done.
Today, I’m proud to report that the Democratic Party members and volunteers stepped up their game here in Madison County. Seeing the extreme importance of engagement in getting voters to the polls at a new level, we rolled up our sleeves. Over the past several weeks, we hosted postcard parties for low-turnout Madison County voters and in swing states, as well as Shamari Figures for Congress, sending out hundreds of postcards using a record number of volunteers. We trained and deployed an army of poll watchers across the county to work the polls. We raise our visibility across the county through billboards and signs and by distributing Harris Walz swag, which raised a renewed level of presence, and we’ve only just begun. This election generated energy and vigor in the local Democratic Party that had not been seen in years. It propelled V.P. Kamala Harris to victory and proved that Democrats can win in Madison County. Some of the most unusual alliances were built to win this critical election and to protect our fundamental human rights in this country.
Going forward, we plan to build on this momentum by unifying, energizing, and strengthening the Party, recruiting more Democrats to run for office, and putting more Democrats on the ballot in Madison County for upcoming elections.
As Chair of the local Party, I must recognize and thank the committed Democratic Party warriors who selflessly and tirelessly worked to the end to ensure that the Party was fully engaged in Madison County during this cycle. Volunteers like, Anita Bullock, Brenda Wright-Love, Zoie Roberson, David Person, Jim Bosley, Don Brown, Steve Canerossi, Elenor Burks to name a few, showed an exemplary level of commitment and hard work some fully upfront and others behind the scenes.
It is true, when we fight together, we win!
