Monte Sano State Park is one of the attractions mentioned in an August 2024 Forbes.com article praising Huntsville as a “best-kept secret destination.” (Joe Songer)

One Alabama city is getting some love from Forbes.com for being possibly “The South’s Best-Kept Secret Destination,” and it’s a lot farther from the beach than you might guess.

The new article at Forbes.com depicts Huntsville as a “charming Southern city [that] doesn’t usually top travel lists” but says “that’s part of what makes it so fascinating.”

“Huntsville offers much more than you might expect, from its intriguing aerospace heritage to a surprisingly vibrant culinary scene and various activities,” writes contributor Jordi Lippe-McGraw. “So if you’re up for a little adventure off the beaten path, Huntsville might just become your new favorite spot.” She says Huntsville is attractive in its own right, but also makes a great side trip from Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis or Atlanta.

Residents of a city that ranks as the state’s largest, and which continues to experience rapid growth, might be surprised to hear that they’re off the beaten path. Many readers also will be startled to read that the Gulf Coast oysters at Sea Salt are “a rare treat in a landlocked state like Alabama.” We’ll consider that last bit an accidental slip rather than an unforgiveable groaner, as the author has written kindly about Mobile at least once in the past.

But there’s an interesting perspective here, one that weights Adult Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center as one of the city’s greatest attractions. Availability may be limited and it might start at $899 per person, but it really is a unique reason to visit Huntsville. The author’s appreciation isn’t superficial: She recently wrote about attending Adult Space Camp for another outlet, with a headline positing that it might be “the ultimate couples getaway.”

Points of interest that get mentioned in the Forbes piece include The KaffeeklatschPizzelle’s Confections, Baker & Able at the 106 Jefferson Hotel and a variety of parks, museums and historic attractions.
