{"id":3542,"date":"2023-02-15T15:54:55","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T20:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=3542"},"modified":"2023-06-16T16:10:01","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T20:10:01","slug":"officials-respond-to-report-stating-23-baltimore-city-public-schools-have-no-students-proficient-in-math","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2023\/02\/15\/officials-respond-to-report-stating-23-baltimore-city-public-schools-have-no-students-proficient-in-math\/","title":{"rendered":"Officials respond to report stating 23 Baltimore City Public Schools have no students proficient in math"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Tashi McQueen,<br \/>\nAFRO Political Writer,<br \/>\ntmcqueen@afro.com<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) representatives are responding to outrage over the disclosure that 23 City Schools have zero students deemed proficient in mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>The Statewide Spring 2022 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) testing results show that while City Schools students returned to \u201cpre-pandemic levels of proficiency\u201d in English Language Arts (ELA), they struggled in math.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/msde\/maryland-state-department-of-education-provides-update-to-statewide-spring-2022-maryland-comprehensive-assessment-program-mcap-results\/\">Maryland State Department of Education<\/a> (MSDE), it was disclosed that \u201cmath proficiency percentages for grades three through eight decreased from 33 percent in 2018-2019 to 22 percent in 2021-2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Riley, executive director of communications for City Schools, responded to the findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw these scores, we knew students struggled during the pandemic just like other school districts,\u201d said Riley. \u201cThese results are from students starting school below grade level and a global pandemic. We have to find the best way to catch them up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose 23 schools do not begin to describe the situation,\u201d Riley continued. \u201cWe have a solid plan and we\u2019re making sure we work with our parents so that they understand these test results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The impacted schools include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abbottston Elementary<\/p>\n<p>Achievement Academy at Harbor City High<\/p>\n<p>Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore International Academy West<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore School for the Arts<\/p>\n<p>Belmont Elementary<\/p>\n<p>City Neighbors High School<\/p>\n<p>Collington Square Elementary\/Middle<\/p>\n<p>Coppin Academy High School<\/p>\n<p>Dallas F. Nicholas, Sr., Elementary<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy I. Height Elementary<\/p>\n<p>Excel Academy at Francis M. Wood High<\/p>\n<p>Forest Park High School<\/p>\n<p>Independence School Local I<\/p>\n<p>Johnston Square Elementary<\/p>\n<p>New Era Academy<\/p>\n<p>Park Heights Academy Elementary School<\/p>\n<p>Renaissance Academy<\/p>\n<p>Steuart Hill Academic Academy<\/p>\n<p>The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary<\/p>\n<p>The Reach! Partnership School<\/p>\n<p>Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Antonio Hayes (D-MD-40) weighed in on the results disclosed in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis news gives me great concern,\u201d Sen. Antonio Hayes (D-MD-40) told the AFRO. \u201cWe, as a state, have invested tremendous resources into Baltimore City schools and public education. I will reach out to the Baltimore City School Board to find out this report\u2019s status and how we can better address students and their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some of the greatest educational institutions in Baltimore City, such as Coppin State University,\u201d said Hayes. \u201cThere\u2019s room for partnerships between the school system and higher education institutions to look at how we can reach out to the urban population of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, only seven percent of Baltimore City students were ranked \u201cproficient\u201d in math. Around the state of Maryland, the highest proficiency rate for mathematics in any county was 38 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Riley said the MCAP tests 14 categories and within half of those categories, City Schools\u2019 rate of improvement was better than the state\u2019s.
