{"id":3224,"date":"2023-04-06T17:38:39","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T21:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=3224"},"modified":"2023-06-02T17:50:35","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T21:50:35","slug":"baltimore-to-host-americas-first-dirt-bike-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2023\/04\/06\/baltimore-to-host-americas-first-dirt-bike-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltimore to host America\u2019s first dirt bike campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Tashi McQueen,<br \/>\nAFRO Political Writer,<br \/>\ntmcqueen@afro.com<\/p>\n<p>After more than a year of work, Brittany Young, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/b360baltimore.org\/\">B-360<\/a>,\u00a0accepted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanhollen.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/cardin-van-hollen-secure-over-80-million-in-direct-investments-for-greater-baltimore-region-in-fiscal-year-2023-funding-bill-vote-to-pass-it-in-senate\">$3 million federal investment<\/a> for the nation\u2019s first dirt bike campus on March 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine a space where you can ride indoors, a space [where] you can run outdoors, a commercial kitchen, classrooms [with] homegrown talent front and center, right here in Baltimore,\u201d said Young.<\/p>\n<p>B-360 is a non-profit that utilizes dirt bikes as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) tools to foster community and inspire careers among Baltimore\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI submitted the grant [application] in February of last year. We went through the Senate and the omnibus process,\u201d said Young. \u201cGetting approved seriously took time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the 2023 fiscal year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/HIGHLIGHTS%20DOCUMENT%20FY%2023.pdf\">omnibus bill<\/a>, B-360 was awarded $2 million for its multipurpose site and $1 million for its educational programming.<\/p>\n<p>Young said the funding will be used\u00a0 initially to hire staff and build the dirt bike campus.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2019, only 4.1 percent of Black-led businesses are firms that have paid employees, compared to 19 percent of White-owned businesses, according to a 2022 Brookings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/black-owned-businesses-in-u-s-cities-the-challenges-solutions-and-opportunities-for-prosperity\/\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If Black businesses had an equivalent share to White-owned businesses, there would be 798,318 more Black businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ben Cardin and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, the state\u2019s Senate delegation (both Democrats,\u00a0were a part of the \u201cBaltimore City team\u201d that helped Young secure the investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCherry Hill has a very proud history and a bright future,\u201d said Cardin at the unveiling. \u201cWe are very excited to be part of this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Hollen spoke about the potential of B-360s vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBikes may look simple, but these are complicated machines,\u201d said Van Hollen at the announcement. \u201cWhen you learn about the bike, you learn about mechanics, design, 3-D printing and physics. If you look at Baltimore City today, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/b360baltimore.org\/\">120,000<\/a> good paying jobs in the STEM fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young said that B-360\u2019s programs will remain 100 percent accessible to all Baltimore youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur program is completely free,\u201d said Young. \u201cWe want to offer memberships, an apprenticeship program, a place where people can repair bikes during the day and an after-school recreation [space].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the announcement, Young hopes to inspire other Black-led organizations to apply for federal funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that this success not only inspires people to join us, but it also welcomes more philanthropic partners to sow those seeds,\u201d Young told the AFRO. \u201cThis is just the beginning for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Brookings report also found that 92 percent of Black-owned small businesses experienced financial hardship in 2020 and 53 percent were more likely to experience difficulty when applying for credit.<\/p>\n<p>In the long run, Young is looking to expand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be everywhere,\u201d said Young. \u201cMy goal is to be in Baltimore, Cleveland, Miami, Detroit, Chicago, Ghana and the list goes on. We can go far as long as people want to work with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the celebration\u2019s on, there\u2019s more work to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re raising $10.5 million,\u201d said Young. \u201cThis three [million] helps, but we have seven more to raise.
