{"id":3021,"date":"2023-02-13T12:40:19","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T17:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=3021"},"modified":"2023-05-31T13:17:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T17:17:09","slug":"afro-charities-receives-2-25-million-federal-investment-to-renovate-upton-mansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2023\/02\/13\/afro-charities-receives-2-25-million-federal-investment-to-renovate-upton-mansion\/","title":{"rendered":"AFRO Charities receives $2.25 million federal investment to renovate Upton Mansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Tashi McQueen,<br \/>\nAFRO Political Writer,<br \/>\ntmcqueen@afro.com<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 13 Frances \u201cToni\u201d Draper, CEO and publisher of the AFRO American Newspapers, and Savannah Wood, executive director of the AFRO Charities, accepted a $2.25 million in federal funds earmarked for community project funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow fitting is it that after 130 years, AFRO Charities is redeveloping this 15,000 square foot building,\u201d said Draper. \u201cWe are here today to celebrate a landmark, funding and this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AFRO Charities is in charge of the AFRO American Newspaper\u2019s archives and connecting the Baltimore community through educational and art projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a labor of love for some time,\u201d said Rep. Kweisi Mfume (MD-D-07). \u201cWe are going to pray that these congressional earmarks continue.
