ATLANTA TRIBUNE \u2014 A California Black teen was recruited to play college basketball and is now entering his freshman year at an HBCU <\/a>against all odds.<\/p>\n

According to Good Morning America<\/em><\/a>, 19-year-old Jeremiah Armstead <\/strong>spent the past three years sleeping in cars and in and out of domestic violence shelters with his mother and siblings.<\/p>\n

Armstead was staying at a friend\u2019s house when he found out he would have the opportunity to pursue higher education at Fisk University.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom called me. \u2018Jay, you just got accepted into Fisk!\u2019 and I\u2019m checking my email \u2026\u201d Armstead recalled of the exciting moment that he said made him feel \u201cany type of adversity that I went through, for the most part, it motivated me and pushed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The HBCU sent him an acceptance letter<\/a> welcoming him into the class of 2026 and his new student ID.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not surprised Jeremiah is where he\u2019s at today,\u201d the teen\u2019s mother Mindy Brooks<\/strong> said. \u201cI\u2019m not surprised because he\u2019s always been a good person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Armstead said he struggled with juggling housing insecurity and his school work, but with the support of family, coaches, and mentors, the 19-year-old was able to persevere and get accepted into Fisk.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was bringing smarts, of course, but it was hard to do that being homeless and juggling everything, like domestic violence situations, just stuff like that,\u201d he said. \u201cLiving in a shelter, living in a car\u2013it was hard to think, go to school, worry about my mom or my brother, my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

This fall, Armstead will also join the university\u2019s basketball program under the guidance of coach and former LA Clippers player Kenneth Anderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely was a blessing for him and his family to be at a university \u2014 Fisk University,\u201d Anderson said. The basketball coach said Armstead\u2019s demeanor and work ethic made him a great fit for the team.<\/p>\n

Armstead said he plans to study kinesiology.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to show people that\u2019s in my circumstances like \u2018don\u2019t stop\u2019,\u201d Armstead added. \u201cDon\u2019t ever think of giving up because just like that, stuff could change.\u201d<\/p>\n
