{"id":2607,"date":"2022-09-02T00:12:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T04:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=2607"},"modified":"2023-05-29T13:25:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-29T17:25:17","slug":"2607","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2022\/09\/02\/2607\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois Colleges Required to Promote Mental Health Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0David Pierce, Contributing Writer | Chicago Defender<\/p>\n<p>Illinois colleges and universities are now required to provide mental resources on students\u2019 identification cards or its website.\u00a0 This comes after Governor JB Pritzker signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/billstatus.asp?DocNum=2014&amp;GAID=16&amp;GA=102&amp;DocTypeID=SB&amp;LegID=134670&amp;SessionID=110\">Senate Bill 2014<\/a> into law last month.<\/p>\n<p>Institutions will need to provide information about their counseling programs and the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Former Parkland College student, Khariyah Mitchell, remembers having a tough first semester in the fall of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said online learning become too much to handle, and she found out she was pregnant.\u00a0The stress from both situations caused her to stop taking classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to get in the swing of things by doing classes online and then things got more difficult when I got pregnant,\u201d Mitchell shared.\u00a0The transition to online learning took a toll on her based on taking high school courses in-person earlier that year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was falling behind when I was taking classes online,\u201d Mitchell said.\u00a0\u201cIt made me feel discouraged by not having that classroom setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkland Counselor, Joe Omo-Sage, said major life-changing events like Mitchell\u2019s can make it hard for students to handle their academic load.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClasses like math are just one thing, but students may not get an A+ due to their significant other breaking up with them, or their parents are getting a divorce,\u201d Omo-Sage said.<\/p>\n<p>Omo-Sage encourages students to use mental resources available on their campus and recommended students do physical activities to stay at peace as they manage stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walk around the building with my students when the weather is nice because those things are systematically wonderful for them to get in touch with their bodies,\u201d Omo-Sage said.<\/p>\n<p>Omo-Sage also recommended that students consider their options before making the decision to take a break, which includes taking a lighter course load instead of rather than being full-time for a semester.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell also shared she\u2019s has been able to manager her responsibilities as a mother and will be returning to Parkland this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagodefender.com\/illinois-colleges-required-to-promote-mental-health-resources\/\">Illinois Colleges Required to Promote Mental Health Resources<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagodefender.com\/\">Chicago Defender<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO DEFENDER \u2014 Institutions will need to provide information about their counseling programs and the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
