{"id":2309,"date":"2022-01-15T13:45:55","date_gmt":"2022-01-15T18:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=2309"},"modified":"2023-05-27T21:46:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T01:46:13","slug":"jefferson-county-commission-allocates-18m-to-local-school-boards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2022\/01\/15\/jefferson-county-commission-allocates-18m-to-local-school-boards\/","title":{"rendered":"Jefferson County Commission Allocates $18M to Local School Boards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Birmingham Times<\/p>\n<p>The Jefferson County Commission presented its annual $18 million to local Boards of Education in December.<\/p>\n<p>The money couldn\u2019t come at a better time, said County Commissioner Sheila Tyson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always important to give money to the schools but with the pandemic and the [Omicron variant] out the time is right now more than ever now,\u201d Tyson said, \u201cwhat if there is another school closing. The kids are already a year behind, some of them are two years . . . So now with this money, it\u2019s a way for us to balance the scales and actually use this to help with the increase their learning ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commission President Jimmie Stephens said the money allows the elected officials to \u201ccelebrate giving back to our children . . . to make sure that our schools remain the staple and forefront of education in the state of Alabama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from 12 local school systems were presented with a check based on the daily number of student attendance in each school district.
