{"id":2178,"date":"2021-11-22T13:44:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T18:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=2178"},"modified":"2023-05-29T15:09:04","modified_gmt":"2023-05-29T19:09:04","slug":"codecrew-is-headed-to-schools-with-tech-in-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2021\/11\/22\/codecrew-is-headed-to-schools-with-tech-in-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"CodeCrew is headed to schools with tech in mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Najee El-Amin | New Tri-State Defender<\/p>\n<p>Memphis-based tech organization CodeCrew has been awarded nearly $1 million towards implementing computer science programs in the state\u2019s school districts.<\/p>\n<p>Teaming up with CSforALL, the pair was able to acquire the three-year grant from the National Science Foundation in late October.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will be utilized to create opportunities for local K-12 facilitator training throughout Tennessee. The duo will begin what they call the SCRIPT (Strategic CSforALL Resource and Implementation Planning Tool), which intends to bring attention to the benefits and value of a computer science curricula.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in the spring of 2022, CodeCrew will lead a series of workshops that will educate district administrators, school leaders and other educators on how to administer SCRIPT.<\/p>\n<p>CodeCrew\u2019s most recent accomplishment has garnered the attention of officials throughout the state. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee took time to weigh in on impressive achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jobs of today and tomorrow increasingly rely on technology,\u201d said Lee. \u201cThis NSF grant and its focus on preparing school districts across the state to teach computer science aligns closely with our Future Workforce Initiative. With both of these innovative initiatives statewide, we intend to make Tennessee a top state for job creation in STEM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CodeCrew has served the community for more than half a decade and have been making waves throughout its tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Early this year, a trio of CodeCrew\u2019s top scholars were selected as the winners of Tennessee Congressional App challenge and have received strong national attention.<\/p>\n<p>In June, CodeCrew also was able to launch The Code Collective initiative with the help of the NBA Foundation.
