{"id":1971,"date":"2021-04-01T14:09:55","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T18:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/?p=1971"},"modified":"2023-05-27T21:59:54","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T01:59:54","slug":"black-students-graduation-rates-improve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnpa.org\/education\/2021\/04\/01\/black-students-graduation-rates-improve\/","title":{"rendered":"Black students\u2019 graduation rates improve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sacramento OBSERVER Staff Report<\/p>\n<p>(CALMATTERS) \u2013 More Black Californians are graduating from college in the wake of key legislative and educational reforms, even as significant disparities in Black and white graduation rates persist, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5f4af3af825368013c58e4547&amp;id=bdef96a5db&amp;e=9e867256b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Tuesday report<\/a> from the nonpartisan research center Campaign for College Opportunity. For example, Black CSU students\u2019 four-year graduation rate doubled over the past decade to reach 20%, even as the gap in Black and White CSU students\u2019 graduation rates grew to 25%, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>One reform that helped put Black students on a faster graduation path was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5f4af3af825368013c58e4547&amp;id=0e8d40ddcd&amp;e=9e867256b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2017 law<\/a>\u00a0that largely allowed community college students to take transfer-level classes without first taking remedial courses \u2014 even though tens of thousands of students are still taking unnecessary remedial classes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5f4af3af825368013c58e4547&amp;id=ca4df69881&amp;e=9e867256b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CalMatters\u2019 Mikhail Zinshteyn found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other key findings from the report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of Black applicants to the UC system shot up 20% after the Board of Regents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5f4af3af825368013c58e4547&amp;id=fb11571fee&amp;e=9e867256b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminated the use of the SAT and ACT in admissions<\/a>.
