Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry is affectionately known as the “Mayor for Life,” and with a recent tweet from the D.C. Council, the activist turned career politician is making his rounds again on social media with people remembering all sides of his past.

The District’s former First Family posed for cute Christmas cards back in the day, and the D.C. Council’s Twitter account brought those vintage photos out for some holiday cheer and reflection. Though a former Mayor, Barry also served on the District of Columbia Council.

“So sad that all three of them have left us,” the D.C. Council tweeted with three separate Christmas cards with the former Mayor, and his wife and son Effie and Christopher Barry.

The cards were filled with messages such as: “May your holiday season be filled with an abundance of love, health and happiness that lasts the whole year through.

Another card read, “Because the progress and goodwill of those we serve are the foundation of our success, it is with heartfelt gratitude that we say Thank You and may the joy of happiness of this holiday season be yours throughout the year.”

Many people were so happy to see the former First Family on their timelines and became nostalgic when seeing the photos and well wishes.

“Good ole days,” one person replied to the posts.

Others took the tweets as an opportunity to express their great appreciation for Barry’s contributions to the District and their lives. 

“Well as someone who was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and was able to have a summer job every year as a teenager and was also able to attend the University of the District of Columbia for FREE as a Ward 8 resident.  I salute MARION BARRY! I’m grateful for his service,” said Twitter user Keivana Johnson. 

“I am often disappointed at how people try to diminish Mayor Barry’s legacy to his personal struggles, but he was a genuine man,” she added.  “With his compassion for the less fortunate and acts of service, I could better myself. My children’s life is better because I am better.”

“The cycle of poverty was broken off my life due to AMAZING programs Mayor Barry provided for the entire city, including the of Ward 8.  I no longer live in D.C., but I am grateful to be where I am today, thanks to a caring mayor like Mayor Barry,” the appreciative Washingtonian added.

“Greatest mayor we ever had for our community,” another woman tweeted.  “They don’t make them like this anymore.  Rest in heaven Marion Barry, my buddy, friend and neighbor.”

Nicknamed “Mayor for Life,” others saw the nostalgic photo to declare their loyalty to Barry.

“If he was on a gurney and moving only one finger, I would vote for him,” one person tweeted.
