Baltimore – Today, Congressman Kweisi Mfume announced nominations of 30 students from Maryland’s 7th congressional district for acceptance into the United States Service Academies’ Class of 2026.
Congressman Mfume has the honor of nominating qualified young people for attendance at four of the Military Service Academies: the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. A nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy, but it is required to be considered. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination for appointment.
To be considered for admission, students must demonstrate leadership potential, moral character and meet specific physical and academic requirements. Prospective nominees are then interviewed by a Selection Committee, comprised of local community leaders from all walks of life. From there, Congressman Mfume hand-selects the finalists.
“Military service for our country is a very high honor. I am proud to continue this tradition of nominating talented young men and women from the 7th district to join one of our nation’s prestigious Military Service Academies,” Congressman Mfume said. “These applicants are truly exceptional, and I am sure they will represent us well.”
The names of the nominees (listed below) have been submitted to the respective Service Academies. The admissions offices will notify applicants of their approval or denial by April 15th. Students accepted into an Academy will have until May 1st to accept the appointment.
Students will be taught how to defend our nation while receiving a full four-year scholarship from an elite Academy institution.
The Ivy League-level education a Service Academy offers is currently valued at more than $525,000. Upon acceptance of an appointment into an Academy, students commit to five years of active-duty service after graduation.
“This program attracts the best and brightest that our district has to offer, and admittance to an Academy is a great achievement. I wish each student the best as they pursue their goal of serving as an officer in the United States military,” Congressman Mfume said.
The applicants come from Howard County, Baltimore County and Baltimore City.
“Thank you to you and the panel for selecting me to represent the 7th district for the United States Air Force Academy. I am humbled and honored for receiving this nomination,” said Dontae L. Ryan, II, a Baltimore City resident who speaks Mandarin, Hindi and French. He is interested in Robotics and is hoping to study engineering at the United States Air Force Academy.
