(HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA)- – Huntsville, known for its commitment to civil rights and equality, commemorated Rosa Parks, a trailblazer in the Civil Rights Movement renowned for her steadfast refusal to relinquish her seat in the face of racial segregation on a Montgomery bus.

On Friday, December 1, designated as Rosa Parks Day, Huntsville Transit extended a gracious gesture to the public by providing complimentary rides on its fixed-route buses. In a poignant tribute, each fixed-route bus showcased a seat at the forefront adorned with a black cover and a pink sash bearing the name of Rosa Parks, generously provided by the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Huntsville Transit has observed and celebrated Rosa Parks Day.

Mayor Battle expressed admiration for Rosa Parks, emphasizing the enduring impact of her defiant stance against segregation. “Rosa Parks’ courageous act remains an enduring source of inspiration. It not only defined a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement but also propelled our nation towards integration and inclusion for all.”

The commemoration of Parks’ act of peaceful defiance, now in its 68th year, serves as a reminder of the Montgomery bus boycott, a seminal event that catalyzed the Civil Rights Movement.

Quisha Bryant, Director of Huntsville’s Parking and Public Transportation Department, highlighted the city’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and accessibility. “In honoring the profound impact of Rosa Parks, whose courageous act sparked a pivotal moment in history, Huntsville Transit is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in our community. This commemoration not only pays tribute to her remarkable courage but also provides an opportunity for people to experience our transit system for free and witness our commitment to inclusivity.”

As a tribute to her enduring legacy, Huntsville Transit extended its offer of free rides on fixed-bus routes on Friday, December 1.
