Life At The Chicago Crusader

Chicago is such a beautiful city. Our first assignment for The Chicago Crusader was to attend the press briefing that Mayor Lori Lightfoot held for news publications in the area. It was inspiring to watch her control the room and exert her power as the first Black female mayor of such a prominent city. She even gave us a shout out!
We later went out on an assignment to cover the digital transition of the renowned Chicago Defender. It was once one of the largest African-American newspapers in the world and Michelle Obama talked about its influence in her book Becoming. The transition caused so much consternation in the community that Reverend Jesse Jackson spoke out on behalf of the Defender’s valuable legacy.
The experience helped me to recognize that as audiences turn to their phones for news, we have to ensure that we don’t stay stuck in the past. It’s hard to let go of what we’re used to, but we are transitioning into a paperless society. However, I do believe that there is a place for print because of how permanent and tactile it is. Hopefully, other publications don’t follow this trend and completely eradicate their print editions.
We spent our weekend at the Taste of Chicago and were also able to see Jennifer Hudson perform live. I’m super excited for the upcoming week. I’ll be covering the upcoming R. Kelly trial, and will write on the impact of Ava Duvernay’s ‘When They See Us.’
I also am very excited to travel out of the city for a job interview! I’m so thankful for this experience, I have been given the opportunity to invest in myself, first, by purchasing a new computer and creative software, and second, now I am financially able to travel to this job interview.
