Week Three: Time Is Flying
My favorite story that I covered this week was a press conference by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. I got a chance to practice my photography at the event which was huge for me.

I have finally started working on my story about Go-go music. My team and I went to a Go-go show and now I completely understand why the people of Washington D.C. are so committed to keeping the music as part of the city’s culture
Introducing 2018 Discover the Unexpected alumna Ila Wilborn. Ila is a member of the 2019 graduating class of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Journalism.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2015 report on the role of American fathers in family life, which noted the critical roles fathers played in the health and development of their children, defied stereotypes about Black fatherhood by documenting both their traditional and non-traditional involvement in daily childrearing — even when the fathers were not living in the same home.
In just five days, we have gotten to interview a club manager and a historic ambassador while piecing together the first video for Voice News Now, a multimedia platform we curate for The Atlanta Voice.
We took a tour of the building and got to see their brand new studio center. That was when all the bells started going off! As someone who loves video production, I instantly was creating content ideas in my head.
Our video initiative, Voice News Now, has really started to flourish. We have produced videos for Juneteenth, The Georgia “Fetal Heartbeat” Abortion Law, and the Bird Scooter controversy in Atlanta.
This week we visited Ben’s Chili Bowl, a Black-owned restaurant that’s been present in the city upward for more than 60 years. We also traveled to the White House and were surprised by all the demonstrations we saw. We walked the Washington Mall and saw the Lincoln Memorial. I read Lincoln’s inauguration and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech to myself while there (nerd things). It was great to simply have some American pride and bask in the beauty of the country.
Washington D.C. has the worst traffic I have ever experienced in my life. I have a lot of frustration with the amount of time it takes to get anywhere, but it’s very cool to live in a new place and experience a new city. This was a hectic week, but I look forward to what’s coming.
My experience during the Discover the Unexpected fellowship was everything I hoped it would be, and so much more. There are no words to express the amount of gratitude I have for each individual that I came in contact with during the program. I cannot thank them enough for all that they taught me. They inspired me, motivated me, and gave me unwavering support. During the fellowship, I gained a new perspective on life that superseded the articles I wrote, the beautiful sunburst colored Chevrolet Equinox I got to drive, or even the amazing scholarship I received. None of that meant anything without the people we worked with in the newsroom, the experiences behind the scenes on set, and most of all the people we reported on.
