
BRIELLE SMITH
Brielle Smith is a Spring 2023 Annenberg honors graduate of Howard University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Strategic, Legal,and Management Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. Brielle aims to use her career in communications to advance change by improving the amount of positive representation and visibility of African- Americans in the media. At Howard University, Brielle served as Vice President of the Annenberg Honors Program Student Council, contributed content to Her Campus online magazine, and volunteered as a Howard University student ambassador. Currently, Brielle is conducting research studies analyzing the mental health effects of digital media on minority youth. She has been named a 2021 Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs fellow as well as a 2021 CIEE Frederick Douglass Global Fellow where she traveled to Dublin, Ireland as a guest of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs. Brielle is also a cohort member of the 2022 Howard Entertainment program, sponsored by Amazon Studios, as well as the National Communication Association’s inaugural HBCU PhD Pipeline Program. This year, Brielle was named UNCF Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholar, a distinction given to one male and one female HBCU student per year. In the fall, Brielle will be a graduate fellow at the University of Southern California as a Master of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising candidate.
Getting Started With The Houston Forward Times
First week in Houston is in the books, and I wrote my first cover story! On the first day in the office, we got breaking news about a press conference that would be happening the next morning on some recent killings of innocent children in the Houston area.
Week Five: Landing In Houston
My 5th week as a DTU fellow has been very challenging. I’ve been faced with the task of writing stories at a speed that I’m not accustomed to, but I appreciate the discomfort and growth.
Hello Chicago!
With my first two years completed at North Carolina A&T I have had on-campus experiences pertaining to writing news, interviewing and developing journalism skills. But I’ve never had the opportunity like the one Chevy Discover The Unexpected has given me this summer, to not only travel the country and develop genuine connections, but to also learn about our Black communities and the triumphs and downfalls that occur within them, that are rarely shared on a broader scale in the mainstream media.
