A Birmingham man has pleaded guilty to the rape of an adolescent girl who was impregnated by him.
Jermaine Powers, 42, was arrested in 2020 on charges of first-degree rape and second-degree rape.
Authorities said the charges stemmed from Powers engaging in sexual intercourse with his ex-girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter. The sexual abuse took place from January 2017 until July 2018.
The abuse was discovered when the child became pregnant. DNA testing confirmed that Powers was the father.
Powers pleaded guilty to second-degree rape, according to court records made public this week. In exchange, the first-degree rape charge was dismissed.
Jefferson County Circuit Judge Kechia Davis sentenced Powers to 20 years in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Tyerra Henderson prosecuted the case. Powers was represented by the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office.
