David Oyelowo embodies the legendary Bass Reeves in the Paramount+ series ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’, showcasing the untold tales of frontier justice. Bass Reeves was a runaway slave, Union soldier, gunfighter, farmer, scout, tracker, and deputy U.S. Marshal. He spoke several languages including Cherokee and Creek. Bass was one of the first African-American deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River mostly working in the rough Indian Territory.

Bass Reeves, a legendary lawman of the American frontier, is the focus of a new Paramount+ series titled “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo.

Reeves, a formerly enslaved person turned U.S. Marshal, rose to prominence as one of the most successful law enforcers in the Wild West. Despite being relatively unknown until recently, his heroic feats have captured the imagination of many.

Born into slavery in 1838, Reeves escaped and found refuge among indigenous tribes in what is now Oklahoma. He learned their ways and languages before returning to Arkansas after the Civil War. Reeves later became a deputy U.S. Marshal, tasked with bringing justice to the lawless territories west of the Mississippi River.

His tenure as a lawman was marked by remarkable achievements, including arresting over 3,000 suspects, and killing 14 outlaws. Reeves’ ingenuity and bravery in apprehending criminals earned him a reputation as one of the most proficient law enforcement officers of his time.

Although Reeves’ legacy has been compared to that of characters portrayed by Clint Eastwood, the reality of frontier-era America was harsh and unforgiving. Disease, crime, and conflicts with Native American tribes defined the landscape that Reeves navigated daily.

While there is speculation that Reeves may have inspired “The Lone Ranger,” his story is a testament to the bravery and resilience of Black pioneers who helped shape the American West. Historians like Art T. Burton regard Reeves as one of the greatest frontier heroes in American history.

Today, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” streams on Paramount+ and offers viewers a glimpse into the life and adventures of this extraordinary figure.
