The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team is set to open regular season action as they welcome Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent, No. 24 Alabama on Thursday. The game will make history, as it is the first time the program has hosted an SEC team. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Event Center. The Alabama A&M University men’s basketball team also opens the 2024-25 campaign Thursday as the Bulldogs host Oakwood. Tip-off against the Ambassadors is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs went 15-16 overall and 10-8 in Southwestern Atlantic Conference (SWAC) play last season, and reached the quarterfinals in the conference tournament, where they fell 82-74 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Bulldogs usher in a new era, bringing in head coach Dawn Thornton to the helm of the women’s basketball program. She brings in 12 transfer players, including Shelomi Sanders of the University of Colorado, Lauryn Pendleton of Arkansas State and SWAC Preseason All-SWAC First Team honoree, Coriah Beck. The Maroon and White return Darian Burgin, LaCambria Shakespeare and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Alisha Wilson. Alabama A&M opened the season with an exhibition contest at home against the Oakwood University Ambassadors, claiming victory by a 96-50 margin.
The Alabama A&M University men’s basketball team has a busy slate during the opening month of the season, with seven of its nine games being played at home. The Bulldogs open with Oakwood, followed by contests with Arkansas Baptist (Nov. 11) and Fisk (Nov. 13), before going on the road for back-to-back games for the only time in the first month.
