American Rescue Plan funding will support new, larger community health center to serve low-income residents in eastern Baltimore County
Baltimore (October 26, 2021) – Baltimore Medical System (BMS), the largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) system in Maryland, has been awarded $1,109,730 from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) to support the relocation of its Middlesex Health Center. Currently located at 1245 Eastern Boulevard, BMS at Middlesex will be moving to 9504 Philadelphia Road to a new space that will double its current footprint as it continues its work to improve the health, wellness, and quality of life for underserved residents of eastern Baltimore County. The new location is expected to open in spring 2022.
HHS awarded the funds to Baltimore Medical System through the American Rescue Plan, which has provided almost $1 billion to nearly 1,300 Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Health Center Program-funded health centers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories to support major construction and renovation projects. These awards will strengthen primary health care infrastructure across the U.S. and advance health equity and health outcomes in medically underserved communities, including through projects that support COVID-19 testing, treatment, and vaccination.
Baltimore Medical System operates eight community health centers, three pharmacies and eight school-based health sites around Baltimore, and serves more than 60,000 patients annually, including those who are underserved and uninsured. The new Middlesex Health Center will enable BMS to better serve the more than 37,000 low-income community residents who are not currently accessing health care services.
