In a bid to bridge the digital divide, AT&T and Human IT are donating 70 refurbished laptops to Drake State Community & Technical College. The laptops, funded through an AT&T grant, will be distributed to local students and families in need, with recipients having been pre-selected prior to the event.
The donation event took place on Monday, August 5th at 10:00 a.m. at Drake State Community & Technical College, located at 3421 Meridian Street N., Huntsville. The laptops were handed out at the Library/Administrative Building, the tallest and most prominent structure on campus.
Community leaders and volunteers were on hand to assist with the distribution. Among those attending are Alabama State District 8 Senator Steve Livingston, Madison County District 6 Commissioner Violet Edwards, and Drake State Community & Technical College President Dr. Patricia Sims.
This initiative addresses a significant issue in Alabama, where approximately 15% of households lack access to the internet or necessary devices. The effort is part of the AT&T Connected Learning® program, which seeks to mitigate the digital divide by enhancing internet accessibility, affordability, and safe adoption. AT&T has committed $5 billion to connect 25 million people to high-speed internet by 2030.
