Arts In Movement: Courageous 8 Traveling Exhibit Honors Selma’s Voting Rights Activists in Huntsville Tour

Huntsville, AL (June 7, 2024) – The Alabama Association for the Arts (ALAA) is proud to partner with Arts Huntsville, the National Education & Empowerment Coalition (NEEC), and the Friends of Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trails to bring the “Arts in Movement: Courageous 8 Traveling Exhibit” to Huntsville, Alabama.

A Celebration of History, Art, and Social Justice

This powerful, free to community, exhibition sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of Selma’s “Courageous Eight,” a group of unsung heroes who played a pivotal role in the fight for voting rights during the Civil Rights Movement. Through various art forms, the exhibit honors their sacrifices and contributions to the ongoing struggle for social justice.

Schedule of Events:

Sunday, June 16 (4 pm – 6 pm): Intimate Mixer with Special Guests (Location: AVIQ) – Producer Codie Gopher of Seven Two Project, Gloria Hollins of AL Association for the Arts, and guests will discuss the importance of preserving history through art and culture.
Monday, June 17 (10 am – 4 pm): Public Viewing (Location: Huntsville Revisited Museum) – Open to the public to view the exhibit.
Monday, June 17 (6 pm – 8 pm): Intimate Mixer with Artist Phyllis Parks and Special Guests (Location: Huntsville Revisited Museum) – Hear directly from the artist and representatives of the Courageous 8 families about the inspiration behind the exhibit.
Tuesday, June 18 (6 pm – 8 pm): Public Exhibit Viewing & Youth Community Conversation (Location: Omega Center) – This event, held in conjunction with the National Civil Rights Conference, features a youth roundtable discussion moderated by Jasamine Byrd of WZDX Fox 54. HBCU students will participate in a conversation about bridging the generational gap in understanding history through art.
Wednesday, June 19 (1 pm – 7 pm): Juneteenth Celebration & Final Viewing (Location: Oakwood University Church Family Life Center) – This self-guided viewing opportunity coincides with Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
