On October 18, 2024, the five-time GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter/producer PJ Morton is coming to Chandler Center for the Arts. His plush vocals, New Orleans rooted grooves and Motown-influenced orchestrations are musical genius that has been called, “a balm for the mind, heart and spirit.” Known for being the full-time keyboardist with pop band Maroon 5 for more than 12 years, he laso has his own record label (Morton Records) and has collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Jon Batiste, Nas, Lil Wayne, Yebba, Jill Scott and many others
As the child of two preachers, church served as his introduction to music. While his music remains rooted in gospel, he has explored music that goes across genres with influences spanning R&B and rock, The Beatles and James Taylor.
Morton is touring with his new album Cape Town to Cairo, whichwas recently released on June 14. The music was created while he spent 30 days in four African countries – South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Egypt. The artist did a Q & A with Chandler Center for the Arts in anticipation of his performance at the arts center in October.
1. Talk about your journey to becoming a musician. I came from a musical family so music was always around. Also was born in New Orleans you couldn’t escape music. So, I had it from all ends. Music always spoke to me.
2. You have done a lot to support NOLA artists, can you share a bit about what you are doing and where this passion came from?
Well, I’ve just tried to be an open door as far as helping where I can whether it be advice or otherwise. When I first moved back home I started an open mic that gave a platform for new artists to perform. The passion really just comes from remembering when I was coming up and how I just wanted someone to believe in me.
3. What should people expect when they come to your show? What do you want them to walk away with?
A lot of energy. We like to have a good time. I want people to leave with the feeling that they were able to transcend do another place for a little while
4. What inspires you when you are creating music? I try to remain open as possible. I’m really just inspired by life
5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be in the music business?
I’d tell them to learn the actual business and really try to define what they want out of it.
6. If you weren’t a musician, what profession do you think you would have?
Hmm maybe a lawyer or a therapist ha.
7. Who are you listening to right now?
My new music coming out soon! Cape Town To Cairo
