SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS
Army Secretary Christine Wormuth has taken decisive action, suspending one of the Army’s top generals, Gen. Charles Hamilton, following allegations of improper intervention in a service assessment panel’s proceedings. The suspension comes after Military.com’s investigative reporting uncovered potential misconduct surrounding Hamilton’s attempts to influence the career trajectory of a subordinate officer.
The investigation revealed that Hamilton may have engaged in a “pressure campaign” to sway the Army Command Assessment Program panel to support a lieutenant colonel seeking a battalion command post. Despite the panel’s determination that the lieutenant colonel was unfit for command due to ineffective leadership, Hamilton allegedly persisted in lobbying efforts to reverse the decision.
Hamilton’s conduct viewed as highly irregular by Army officials, prompted Secretary Wormuth to refer the case to the Defense Department inspector general for further investigation. In the meantime, Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan will assume Hamilton’s duties as the deputy commander of Army Materiel Command.
The controversy surrounding Hamilton’s actions has raised concerns about the integrity of the Army’s command selection process. The Command Assessment Program, designed to ensure fairness and impartiality, came under scrutiny as Hamilton’s alleged interference high- lighted potential vulnerabilities in the system.
SUSPENDED
Army officials have acknowledged the need to thoroughly review the command assessment process to safeguard against future manipulation. While many maintain confidence in the program’s overall effectiveness, the incident underscores the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability in highstakes leadership appointments within the military.
Hamilton’s suspension marks a rare instance of disciplinary action against a senior Army officer, reflecting the seriousness with which the allegations are being treated. As the investigation unfolds, the Army faces a critical moment in upholding its commitment to integrity and professionalism at all levels of command.
