Stefan Smith of Tuskegee

Stefan Smith of Tuskegee won the ultimate prize of a Mercedes Benz on ‘The Price Is Right’ just before Christmas in December.

“Not in 100 years did I think I would win,” said Smith.

He mentioned that there’s no way of knowing if you’ll be a contestant in the game until they call your name during the taping.

“First of all, I was just happy to be there. When I got on stage, I was all nervous with the lights and cameras. I was just excited to be on Contestants Row,” said Smith. “But I just kept thinking, ‘Oh my gosh I’m in front of all these people on national TV.’ I just tried to remain calm and don’t do anything stupid. I was okay with not winning anything, I was just excited to be on the show.”

On the show, Smith played the game the Golden Road, which requires the contestant to guess two missing digits in the three-digit price of a prize. If correct, the contestant then uses the price of the three-digit prize to identify the missing digit of a prize with four digits in its price. If correct, the contestant then uses the price of the four-digit prize to identify the missing digit in a luxury prize.

The Mercedes Benz isn’t the only thing he won on the show. He also won a PS5, polaroid cameras, and a ski snow package.

“I’ve seen that game multiple times on the show,” Smith said. “I already knew how to play the game. It’s not a hard game, but it’s not easy either. It’s a total guess, you really don’t know. The audience doesn’t know any better than you do. You have some people who turn to the audience looking for an answer, but go with your gut. Always go with your gut!”

Right now, Smith drives a Durango. He said he plans to keep the truck to move his camera equipment around, but plans on driving the Benz on the weekends.

Smith is originally from Newark, N.J., but moved to Alabama to be a student at Tuskegee University in the early ‘90s. He said that the Tuskegee band is what has kept him there for so many years.

“I ran the media department for the university’s band, but now I work as a videographer and photographer in the Marketing and Communications office for the school,” said Smith.

Smith has been watching ‘The Price Is Right’ since he was a little boy. He’s been a guest on the show five previous times.

“My mother turned me on to the show,” he said. “I grew up on it. I’m a huge fan of the show!”

According to The Price Is Right fan page, this is the first time in the show’s history that two people have won the Golden Road game in a single season.
