Dr. Ethel G. Jones, Chair of the AAMU Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Recent AAMU graduate Khara Fayne joined Dr. Ethel G. Jones, Chair of the AAMU Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Conference in Minneapolis.

For over a century, AAFCS has gathered educators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and business professionals at its annual conference to drive significant societal transformation through integrative approaches to meeting human needs.

Both Fayne and Jones participated in activities with the National Coalition for Black Development in Family and Consumer Sciences (NCBDFCS), an organization dedicated to enhancing and strengthening family and consumer sciences programs at traditionally Black institutions.

Fayne, a native of Nashville, Tenn., was honored with the 2024 NCBDFCS $500 Travel Scholarship. Before graduating this May, Fayne distinguished herself as a family and consumer sciences major with a focus on human development and family studies, noted for her academic excellence and leadership qualities.

Her accolades include recognition for her involvement in AAMU’s STEM Day and her presentation at the 2024 Alabama Affiliate of Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Meeting.

“It was a wonderful conference,” said Fayne. “I learned a lot and networked during my time there. I’m excited about my future in FCS.”

The coalition also awarded Jones a $500 contribution to sponsor a deserving student for the Fall 2024 semester. Through its efforts, the coalition is committed to advancing the fields of Family and Consumer Sciences for the betterment of individuals, families, and communities.

“The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences conference was very inspiring,” added Jones. “I was glad to be part of a team that is retool- ing and cultivating the next generation of leaders.”
