Jackson Receives Sam Lacy Pioneer Award as National Journalist of the Year
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) honored AAMU alum and longtime sportscaster Dee Jackson with the Sam Lacy Pioneer Award in partnership with MLB for National Journalist of the Year.
The award is named in honor of sports columnist and TV commentator Sam Lacy. Past winners include NFL hall of famer Gayle Sayers and Super Bowl champion Doug Williams, as well renown sportscasters David Aldridge and Rob Parker. The NABJ made the announcement on August 4 during its National Convention in Birmingham, just one day after Jackson, a longtime sportscaster at WIAT CBS 42, was promoted to Sports Director.
A former AAMU Bulldog baseball standout, Jackson played for coach Thomas Wesley and got his start in broadcasting at WJAB in the AAMU Electronic Media Communications Department.
Jackson was co-host of the “Locker Room” with Alabama A&M Hall of Fame broadcasters Ike Rooks, and Erica Fox. He also served as host of the “Alabama A&M Basketball Review” with legendary coach and hall of famer Vann Pettaway.
An Emmy winner, Jackson has worked in Montgomery, Alabama and Kansas City, Missouri and is an Alabama Broadcasters Association Sportscaster of the Year honoree. Jackson is also an author. His book, “The Name on the Back of the Jersey,” highlights the importance of mentoring young men.
