Recent federal cutbacks may have affected Alabama’s National Weather Service offices, but officials aren’t confirming any job losses. The National Weather Service and its Public Affairs Office declined to comment on internal staffing.
Reports surfaced that hundreds of NOAA employees nationwide, including meteorologists, were let go—especially those on probationary status. The Trump administration, with Elon Musk leading government efficiency efforts, is downsizing what they call a bloated federal workforce.
The weather community, including Alabama meteorologist James Spann, voiced concern, praising NWS staff for their vital role in public safety. It’s still unclear if Alabama’s offices in Huntsville, Birmingham, Mobile, or Tallahassee were impacted.
Despite the uncertainty, NOAA says it remains committed to providing weather forecasts and warnings to protect the public.
