People 60 and older who meet income eligibility standards can receive a $50 benefit card to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from farmers markets and farm stands in Alabama.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries operates the federally funded Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

“The SFMNP card allows senior citizens to purchase more local products. I want to encourage those who are eligible to apply and begin shopping local,” Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate said in a news release “ADAI looks forward to another year of supporting Alabama’s farmers and senior citizens through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.”

To be eligible, applicants’ gross household income cannot exceed limits:

  • $2,248 monthly for a household of one.
  • $3,041 monthly for a household of two.
  • $3,833 monthly for a household of three
  • $4,625 monthly for a household of four
  • $5,419 monthly for a household of five
  • $6,210 monthly for a household of six
