NEWS RELEASE

Benard Simelton, President of Alabama NAACP

The Alabama State Conference of the NAACP and other social justice organizations had a press conference to remember the anniversary of the insurrection attack on the nation’s capital on Monday, January 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Dr. Richard Showers Sr. Recreation Center at 4600 Blue Spring Road NW, Huntsville, AL.

In the 2020 Presidential Election, Joe Biden won, becoming the 46th President of the United States, beating former President Donald Trump and ending his chances of re-election. Defeated with unbelief, at a “Save America Rally” former president Trump urged his supporters to “Stop the Steal”. Trump called for a recount of the election and for former Vice President Mike Pence to not certify the election results.  Moments afterwards on January 6, 2021, many of his supporters attacked the U.S. Capital injuring several, including law enforcement personnel.  This incident also resulted in the death of some, and others died later of the injuries sustained during the insurrection.

“It is imperative that the community understands the importance of voting, election cycles, and election outcomes,” said Benard Simelton, President of Alabama NAACP. “Not just the 2020 election, but all elections whether local, state or national.  We want to encourage supporters to never give up, that they must continue to vote. Your vote is your voice,” said Simelton.

Our mission is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.
