Foreign service and intelligence community members and family members will get in-state tuition rates at University of Alabama System campuses starting July 1.

The amendment was proposed by the financial committee at UA System’s Board of Trustees meeting Friday and was approved unanimously.

Under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, members of the Foreign Service, an officer or employee of the intelligence community and their families can attend UA at in-state rates if their permanent duty station and domicile is in Alabama.

In-state tuition rates were previously only available for veterans and active members of the Armed Forces.

Under the updated rule, citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau, can also receive in-state tuition rates because of international agreements “to freely live, work, travel and study in the U.S.”

The updates were required due to recent federal laws requiring public universities to expand in-state tuition benefits.

Other public colleges in the state should offer the same options starting this fall.
