Dr. Clarence Sutton, Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools

The Alabama A&M University Office of Student Activities & Leadership Development invites the community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its annual MLK Day Celebration on Tuesday, January 14, at 12:30 p.m. in Buchanan Hall Auditorium. The event will feature an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Clarence Sutton, Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, and a powerful performance by the AAMU Gospel Choir.

Sutton, a veteran educator with over 30 years of experience as a teacher, principal and central office administrator, has been a transformative leader in Huntsville City Schools since his appointment as Superintendent in June 2023. Sutton has served as the district’s Chief of Staff, Deputy Superintendent of Learning Supports, and Chief Academic Officer prior to becoming Superintendent.

Before coming to Huntsville, Sutton served as the longtime principal of Central High in Tuscaloosa where the school significantly increased graduation rates, increased yearly scholarship offers for students, and established a career pathway program which is now used as a model across the state. Sutton believes in the power of partnerships with busi- nesses and community organizations to enhance student learning and develop potential workforce opportunities for students after high school.

In his current role, Sutton focuses on strategic planning, student achievement, and creating a supportive culture for educators and staff. His leadership exemplifies the ideals of Dr. King – equity, opportunity, and the belief in the power of education to transform lives.

This year’s MLK Day theme, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365,” draws inspiration from Dr. King’s enduring work and the legacy of Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

Join AAMU students, faculty, staff, and the wider community for this uplifting program of reflection, inspiration, and a renewed call to action.

This event is free and open to the public.
