Applications Now Open for 1890 LGI Student Firefighter Training Program

The 1890 Land Grant Institution (LGI) Wildland Fire Consortium is now accepting applications for its Student Firefighter Training Program. The U.S. Forest Service partnership is modeled after Alabama A&M University’s successful FireDawgs program, a student-led forest firefighting team created in 2009 to increase the participation of minorities in fire management. The Consortium now includes the U.S. Forest Service, Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Southern University and Tuskegee University.

This fully funded program offers comprehensive fire management training through a series of events, workshops, and fieldwork, including:

  • Kickoff Event in Montgomery, Alabama (November 15-17, 2024)
  • 2-Day Professional Workshop & Drone Symposium at Florida A&M University (February 21-23, 2025)
  • Wildland Fire Training at Alabama A&M University (May 27-June 7, 2025), with meals and dorm accommodations provided

Eligible students must be full-time undergraduates majoring in forestry, natural resources, or a related science discipline with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Program participants will receive a $3,500 stipend, travel support for training and conferences, hands-on fire field training, and valuable fire certifications.
