Etta B. Freeman, a beloved teacher and pillar of her community, passed away at the age of 107 on December 14, 2024. Known for her kindness, compassion, and courage, she left behind a legacy that spanned generations.

Born on July 27, 1917, Etta was raised by her grandparents and graduated from Decatur Negro High School in 1937. Inspired by her principal, Mr. C.J. Hurston, and supported by her brother Sam Bankston—who sent her twenty-five dollars monthly—she pursued higher education. Etta completed two years at Alabama State College, which qualified her for a teaching position in 1939.

Her teaching journey began in Moulton, Alabama, where she worked for two years before marrying Charles Henry Freeman in 1941. By 1943, Etta returned to Decatur, where she resumed her calling at Cherry Street Elementary School. In the 1950s, determined to further her education, she enrolled at Alabama A&M University, earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Etta taught for 37 years, dedicated another 20 years as a substitute teacher, and even served as a Walmart greeter for four years. Her unwavering commitment to her students and community was celebrated widely. On her 90th birthday in 2007, over 300 former students gathered to honor her, a testament to her lifelong impact. Mrs. Freeman has a park named in her honor, and she once shared her philosophy on life: it’s “just what you make of it.”

Etta was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, her son Charles Richard Freeman, and her brother Sam Bankston. She is survived by her loving daughter-in-law Jewel Freeman; grandchildren Cheryl (Cleveland) Smith, Shaka Freeman, Biko (Precious) Freeman, Nora Jackson, Jewel “JJ” Freeman, and Chaske (Raquel) Freeman; eight great-grandchildren; and countless relatives, friends, and former students.

“What a blessing Ms. Etta Freeman was to her community!” one friend shared, reflecting the sentiment of many. “Her life was a shining example of kindness, compassion, and courage.”

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at First M.B. Church in Decatur, with burial following in Sterrs Cemetery. Public viewing will take place on Tuesday, December 17, at Jackson Memory Funeral Home from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Decatur Youth Enrichment (C/O Maxine Ellison, PO Box 1841, Decatur, AL 35602), honoring Etta’s lifelong dedication to education and community enrichment.
