The longest running African-American newspaper in North Alabama.

Oakwood Adventist Academy’s Year Book class, with their instructor (SECOND ROW, FAR LEFT) Dawna Baker visited Speakin’ Out News on last Wednesday, October 26th. Above (FIRST ROW, FAR LEFT) is William D. Smothers, publisher and founder of Speakin’ Out News.

The Oakwood Adventist Academy’s Year Book class participated in a tour of Speakin’ Out News. Not only was this an opportunity for the 9 students to learn what it takes to develop a weekly news- paper, but they were also able to walk away with a historical perspective. William Smothers (Founder/Editor) shared “why” it was important to start this African American business and the students were able to witness its sustainability over 42 years later. The students were accompanied by their instructor, Dawna Baker and co-sponsor, Ray Leftridge.
