During Black History Month, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D), Baltimore City Mayor Brandon M. Scott (D) and several others gathered for a commemorative photo, recognizing the Black Men of Excellence who are currently leading in Maryland.
According to State Del. Jeffrie Long (D-District 27B), who organized the photo, Black Men of Excellence is an unofficial group of Black male politicians who exude excellence in the work they do throughout Maryland every day.
“When I look back at this photo–taken in just 15 minutes but now a powerful symbol–I don’t see just an image; I see a moment in time when strong Black men came together in unity and support during these unprecedented times,” said Long. “We stand in solidarity with Black men and women who overwhelmingly showed up for democracy last November. This photo represents more than just us; it represents them.”
State Sen. Cory McCray (D-Md.-45) shared with the AFRO what taking this photo meant to him.
“This moment was more than a photo—it was a declaration,” said McCray. “A reminder that Black men are not just present; we are leading, building and shaping the future. I hope people see this and understand that Black excellence is not just about individual success; it’s about uplifting our communities, breaking barriers and ensuring that the next generation has even greater opportunities.”
State Del. Michael “Mike” Rogers (D-District 32) encouraged Black Marylanders concerned about the uncertainty ahead.
“For those who see this image, we hope it serves as both inspiration and affirmation,” said Rogers. “The future of Black America mattered yesterday, it matters today and it will always be a priority, especially in the chambers of the Maryland General Assembly.”
