A gun discharged inside the backpack of a second grader at a Huntsville elementary school during dismissal Thursday afternoon.
Students were getting ready to leave Challenger Elementary School when the gun went off, according to Huntsville City Schools, WHNT reported.
Efforts by AL.com to reach the school system were not immediately successful.
It was unclear if anyone was injured during the incident.
School system officials said the student involved faces disciplinary action.
Huntsville City Schools said it is working with law enforcement and asked parents to ensure weapons at home are properly secured.
