Lakeside High Class of 1969 celebrated their 55th reunion with joy and pride at the River City Event Center, where old friendships were rekindled.

The only Black high school in Decatur, Alabama, Lakeside High, was closed 55 years ago due to desegregation. The closure marked the end of an era for the community, as it meant the dissolution of the school’s all-Black bands, choirs, cheerleading squads, football and basketball teams, and other organizations. Lakeside had been the heart of Decatur’s Black community, and its loss was deeply felt. Despite the sorrow, nothing could be done to reverse the decision.

To keep the spirit of Lakeside alive, school and class reunions have been held regularly, celebrating the cherished memories and legacy of the Lakeside Tigers. “Go Tigers!” is still proudly cheered by alumni. The last class to graduate from Lakeside was the Class of 1969.

On August 23-25, 2024, the Class of 1969 hosted its 55th reunion, titled “55 and ALIVE.” Thirty-five classmates and their guests attended the event, which was a joyful and fulfilling occasion. Brenda Atkins Kirk traveled the farthest, all the way from Los Angeles. First-time attendee Alonzo Hurth expressed how much he enjoyed reconnecting with old friends.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the crowning of Reunion Queen, Lynne Ratliff Herring, who was honored with a sash, candy, gifts, and a plaque in recognition of her outstanding and selfless work in making the reunion such a success. The reunion committee members who worked alongside Lynne included Julia Clay, Mary Phillips, Mary Kelly, Brenda Smith, Edna Clack, Judy Allen, Carol Harris, Brenda Greene, Norma Morrow, and John Stevenson.

The 55th reunion placed a special emphasis on education and professionalism, with sponsors encouraging attendees to mentor local youth. Sponsors included Reynolds Funeral Home, Nash Barbeque, Drs. Eugene and Jeanette Rogers, Cedric Evans, Dr. Trevi Hayden-Williams, and Goode Tax Service. The class also announced plans to give back to the community by offering a scholarship to a deserving student.

The reunion festivities began on August 23 with a casual get-together at Logan’s Roadhouse. On August 24, the class gathered for a brunch at 10:00 a.m. followed by games. That evening, a dinner and dance was held at the River City Event Center, which was beautifully decorated in Lakeside’s black and gold school colors. The reunion concluded on August 25 with a worship service at Westside Baptist Church, led by Pastor Keenan Nichols. The classmates came together in gratitude to thank God for His goodness and to celebrate 55 years since their graduation.
