A child is recovering after an accidental shooting in Dothan.

On Wednesday night – about 8:40 p.m. – officers were dispatched to a hospital on a report of a 3-year-old that had been shot in a lower extremity.

Police learned the child had climbed into the lap of an adult male who had a pistol in his pocket. The child accidentally hit the trigger, causing the gun to fire.

The shooting happened in the 400 block of Mona Drive.

Authorities said the child was treated, released and expected to make a full recovery.
