Huntsville, AL – Drake State Community and Technical College has completed a significant $15 million renovation project, marking a transformative milestone for its Meridian Street campus. The renovations, funded by the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, included significant upgrades to the Health Sciences building and the library, which are central features of the Historic Black Community College campus.
Health Sciences Building Renovated
The 12,800-square-foot Health Sciences building underwent a comprehensive interior renovation and a new façade. “They kind of gave it a facelift, if you will,” said the HPM Project Manager, Sarah Logan. The revamped building now features a new reception area, offices for Health Sciences staff, a conference room, a break room, and four state- of-the-art skills labs. These labs include simulation spaces with observation areas for instructors to assess students’ clinical work. The expanded facilities aim to provide registered and practical nursing students with more hands- on experience, address- ing the growing demands of healthcare employers. Alice Raymond, Chair of the Health Sciences Department, emphasized the need for enhanced clinical experiences in a safe, low- stress environment. Currently, 190 students are enrolled in health sciences programs.
Library Transformed into a “One-Stop Shop”
The 39,000-square-foot library also received ex- tensive interior renovations. The first two floors now serve as a centralized hub for student services, including financial aid, admissions, advising offices, a testing center, and a campus bookstore. “Our updated library reflects our commitment to providing tailored support services, making Drake State a caring campus for students,” said Dean of Students Nicole Bell. The third floor, housing administration offices, saw new carpet, paint, and ceiling tiles. The library now includes large classrooms, a lecture hall, a conference room, and the Veterans Resource Center, further enhancing its role as a comprehensive student resource.
Ongoing and Future Developments
In addition to these completed projects, construction continues on an $18 million advanced manufacturing center, funded by the Alabama Legislature for the Alabama Community College System. This 50,000-square-foot facility will house mechatronics, electrical technology, engineering design, welding, and machine tool technology programs, supporting the college’s growth initiative through partnerships with local manufacturers. This facility is the first new building on the 61-year-old campus since the library opened in 2005.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Impact
HPM, serving as the construction manager and advisor, played a crucial role in the renovation project, providing pre-construction services, project management, and field coordination. “The new library and nursing school facilities at Drake State Community & Technical College will greatly enhance student life and overall campus involvement,” said Ryan Austin, HPM president. The project also included an overhaul of the mechanical yard attached to the Health Sciences building, doubling its size to accommodate future growth.
Drake State President Patricia Sims expressed gratitude for the improvements: “Our updated library and the transformation of the Health Sciences building to accommodate our expanding nursing programs will enhance student experiences and cultivate a dynamic learning environment. We thank HPM for their expertise and dedication throughout this project, which will impact our students for future years.”
These renovations represent a significant investment in Drake State Community and Technical College’s future, enhancing its ability to serve its students and the community effectively.
