When temperatures drop in Alabama, a visit to the Birmingham Zoo might not be the first item on your to-do list. But if kids or teens are home in the winter, and you’re looking for something to entertain them on holiday break, a trip to see the critters at 2630 Cahaba Road can be an excellent boredom buster.

Here are 10 great reason to visit the zoo during the cold weather months — and some of them have beautiful feathers, nimble trunks, long necks, sharp claws and giant shells.

Bundle up, plan well and make sure to check out the daily activity schedule. You just might find yourself interacting with an elephant, feeding a lorikeet or petting a goat that looks ornery but is actually a sweetheart.
